What is Dye Release?

Dye release is the point at which mixed henna paste has rested long enough for lawsone to be freed from the leaf powder and become available to stain skin. It typically takes several hours to a day depending on temperature.

Dye Release explained

Artists test dye release by dabbing a little paste on the palm: if it leaves a bright orange mark after a minute, the paste is ready. Warm Mumbai weather speeds up dye release compared with colder climates.

Once released, the dye slowly degrades at room temperature, which is why prepared paste is either used quickly or frozen.
