'Black henna' is one of the most misleading terms in the mehendi world - and understanding the difference between it and natural henna could save you from a painful, sometimes permanent skin reaction. Natural henna paste, made from the dried and powdered leaves of the henna plant, only ever produces shades of orange, brown, or maroon - it physically cannot stain the skin jet black. Any paste that promises a true black stain within an hour or two contains PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a synthetic coal-tar dye that is not approved for direct skin application in most countries, including for use in henna paste. The risk with PPD isn't hypothetical. It's a well-documented cause of severe allergic contact dermatitis - redness, blistering, intense itching, and in some cases permanent scarring or chemical burns at the application site. Reactions can appear immediately or up to two weeks after application, and once someone is sensitized to PPD, future exposure (even from hair dye, since PPD is also used there) tends to trigger worse reactions. How to tell natural henna from black henna before it's on your skin: natural henna paste is a muddy green-brown color, smells earthy (sometimes with added eucalyptus or clove oil), and takes hours to develop color, starting orange and darkening over 1-2 days. Black henna paste is often darker, sometimes chemically scented, and artists using it will typically promise a black stain 'ready in 30-60 minutes' - that speed and color combination is the red flag. If you experience burning, intense itching, blistering, or swelling within hours of a mehendi application (rather than the mild tingling that's normal with natural henna), remove any remaining paste immediately, rinse the area, and see a doctor - don't wait to see if it improves on its own. The simplest protection is asking directly: 'Is this 100% natural henna, no PPD or chemical dye added?' before any paste touches your skin, and choosing artists who are upfront about their ingredients rather than vague about them. A booking platform that vets its artists should already be filtering this out, but it never hurts to ask directly, especially for children or anyone with sensitive skin.
